Major issue with SHM –systems is the evaluation of the damage detection capability of the measuring device or system: qualification of the SW or HW according to aviation standards is not enough! Therefore Emmecon Oy has put lots of effort on self-diagnostics and damage detection testing with representative test coupons. Self- diagnostics will show the system operability during detection and will also compensate the environmental effects excistint – e.g. temperature changes.
In coupon tests specimen will be fatigue tested from virgin to damaged with integrated sensor and system continuously detecting damage, with repeated tests – tens, hundreds – the capability and realibility will be proven.
In many cases the measuring modules themselves have to stand extreme conditions e.g. random vibration of 0,6grms2√Hz for 16h where peak acceleration will raise up to 93g.
